Today, a new machine found its way into our MakerSpace: the Ultimaker! This thing look really great! Aside from the glowing lights and white glassy paneling, it has all the makings of a great 3D printer. According to its product page, the Ultimaker “performs difficult 3D printing tasks with ease. Thanks to extensive research and development, it excels at bridging, overhangs and accurate details to realize prints of all shapes and sizes.”
The Ultimaker has the ability to create complex designs up to 223 x 223 x 305 mm in volume and supports the use of a variety of different materials including PLA, ABS, CPE and many more. While the Ultimaker requires the use of a special Cura program in order to print, it does not need a computer interface at the printing stage. Instead, an SD card can be used to directly load Cura files onto the Ultimaker for printing.
